Winds Boost Mercury to a Record 87
Dry Santa Ana winds boosted the temperature to 87 degrees at Los Angeles Civic Center Friday, setting a record for the day and making it the hottest spot in the nation.
The National Weather Service said this was the hottest Jan. 10 on record--one degree warmer than the old mark, set in 1923--and 21 degrees above the temperature that would be statistically normal for the date.
It was also the top reading in the country, the weather service noted.
Humidity remained low, dropping from an overnight high of 27% to a dry-as-toast 11% by the warmest part of the afternoon.
Forecasters said the hot wind will continue to blow today, with the temperature expected to rise again to the upper 80s, but warned that a new storm system is moving in from the ocean with a retinue of cooler temperatures, cloudy skies--and a chance of rain by Tuesday or Wednesday.
