No Idle Threat, Sweetwater’s Williams Scores 51 Points

Share

Sweetwater High School Coach David Ybarra likes to think Mahlon Williams is a threat to score a basket every time he touches the ball. Wednesday night, it seemed as if he did. Williams scored 51 points to lead the Red Devils to an 86-70 win over Montgomery in a Metro-Mesa League game at Sweetwater.

Williams’ total is the fourth highest in San Diego Section history, according to the CIF record book. The record is held Mitchell Lily of Madison, who scored 61 points in a game against San Diego in 1976.

Williams hit of 22 of 33 shots from the field and made 7 of 9 free-throw attempts. He scored 16 points in the first quarter to lead Sweetwater (4-1, 10-6) to a 26-12 advantage. He added 9 in the second quarter, 6 in the third, and then scored 20 of the Red Devils’ 22 points in the fourth quarter. He also pulled down 9 rebounds.

“He really put on a scoring exhibition,” Ybarra said. “He was open all night and our guys went to him. He hit from the inside, the high post, everywhere on the court. He even had a slam.”

Williams’ performance overshadowed a 28-point effort by Montgomery’s Rudy Rodriguez. Kenny Thompson scored 12 for the Aztecs (3-2, 7-6) and Daryl Crawford and Tim Hayward each scored 10.
