A SINGER OF NOTE

All Gladys Knight wanted to do on a recent Friday night was buy a few groceries at a Fairfax Avenue 7-Eleven.

But the store didn’t take checks and Knight didn’t have much cash. She explained who she was, but the clerk, who apparently doesn’t listen to records or watch TV, was skeptical. So a friend of Outtakes who was standing nearby suggested that she sing.

She opened her mouth . . . but before the lyrics were out, the clerk relented. He took the check.
