Knicks Learn that Cartwright, Cummings Both Need Surgery, Are Lost for Season
The New York Knicks received a double blow Wednesday when they learned that center-forwards Bill Cartwright and Pat Cummings both will require surgery and be lost for the season.
Cartwright, who has broken his left foot four times since August of 1984, will undergo surgery next Tuesday. A piece of bone from Cartwright’s heel will be grafted into the area of the fracture at Merritt Hospital in Oakland, Calif. A screw inserted into the broken foot in December of 1984 will be replaced by a new screw.
Cummings, who has missed the last 12 games with chronic tendinitis in his right ankle, experienced a new pain in his tendon since he last played. After he was examined by specialists on both coasts, it was determined that Cummings’ tendon sheath is damaged and needs corrective surgery. Cummings’ surgery is expected to be performed in Boston, possibly Thursday but no later than the end of the week.
