Community College Basketball : Cypress Keeps Pace by Downing Fullerton

Cypress College remained a half-game behind Cerritos in the South Coast Conference with a 73-69 victory over Fullerton Wednesday night at Cypress.

Sophomore guard Bill Dobbs scored 28 points, including 4 in the last 42 seconds, to secure the win.

With the Chargers leading by a point, 69-68, Dobbs was fouled and converted both free throws. After teammate Jeff Martineau stole the ball and passed to Dobbs, he was fouled again. Dobbs was 10-14 from the field and 8 of 11 from the free throw line.

The Chargers (10-1, 20-5) also had Jeff Martineau score in double figures with 10. The leading Hornet scorer was Stevie Snow with 21 points.

Fullerton is 6-6 and 12-13 overall.

Cerritos 105, Golden West 75--Kelley Andrews scored 19 points and Willie Joseph added 17 to help he Falcons beat the Rustlers at Cerritos. Russ Heike added 16 points and Jeff Miller 13 for Cerritos (11-1, 25-2).

Bryon Strahan scored 28 points for the Rustlers (1-11, 5-18).

Saddleback 66, Orange Coast 59--Mike Miner scored 17 points and teammate David Miles added 10 as the Gauchos (5-7, 10-13) beat the Pirates (2-9, 9-15) at Orange Coast.

Mt. San Antonio 72, Rancho Santiago 54--Cletus Jarmon scored 26 points and teammate Ron Draper added 18 points, 18 rebounds and 10 assists to lead Mounties to the win over the Dons at home.

Jarmon and Draper picked up the slack for center James Jones, the team’s leading scorer this yaer, who broke a tooth early in the second half.

With the win, Mt. SAC improves its record to 8-4 in conference and 18-7 overall. Rancho Santiago fell to 3-8 and 15-11.

In women’s action:

Fullerton 73, Cypress 64--The Hornets led by one at the half (36-35) and broke the game open in the second half to beat the Chargers at Fullerton.

The Hornets (8-4, 20-10) had four players score in double-figures, including Rochell Seabrook (15 points), Sharon Lyon (10 points and 10 rebounds) and Sandy Cotton (12 points and 9 rebounds). Cheryl Hoffman had 23 points for the Chargers.

Cerritos 70, Golden West 60--Shelley Bowcutt scored 29 points and added 5 rebounds and 6 assists to lead the Falcons past the Rustlers. Teammate Jane Hentzen had 17 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists.

The win kept Cerritos (10-2, 20-6) tied for first with Saddleback.

Saddleback 81, Orange Coast 73--Connie Waikle scored 40 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to lead the Gauchos (10-2, 19-7) past the Pirates. Sheryle Eiland scored 18 points and had 12 rebounds for Saddleback. Meillisa Fejgase scored 22 points and had 7 rebounds for OCC (8-3, 19-6).
