Pajer Leads UCI to Swimming Win
Freshman Brian Pajer set a school record in the 200-meter breaststroke Friday to lead UC Irvine past Claremont Mudd, 62-51, in a nonconference men’s swim meet at Irvine. Pajer’s time of 2:06.77 broke the record of 2:07.39 set by Brian Herbelin in 1985.
UCI’s Artie Williams remained undefeated in the 200 backstroke by turning in a time of 1:58.27. Also keeping its unbeaten string intact was Irvine’s 400 free relay team, which won in 3:10.51.
Anteater freshmen Mauro Macchi and Matt Wright both were double winners. Macchi won the 1000 free in 9:47.64 and the 500 free in 4:45.00. Wright took the 100 free in 46.98 and the 50 free in 21.88. UCI (7-5) hosts Pomona-Pitzer today at 10.
In women’s swimming:
UC Irvine 67, Claremont Mudd 45--Junior Melanie Reed stayed undefeated by winning the 50 free by almost three seconds in the Irvine pool in 25.58.
Jennifer Luhn and Lee McKinney were double winners for the Anteaters (2-10). Luhn won the 200 individual medley in 2:16.58 and the 500 free in 5:22.55. McKinney took the 100 fly in 1:03.79 and the 100 breast in 1:14.79. The Anteater women also face Pomona-Pitzer today at 10.
