SportsScope : Mighty Muir Girl Cagers (27-0) Rated Team to Beat for 4-A Championship

It is no surprise that Muir High School has been seeded No. 1 in the girls CIF Southern Section 4-A Division basketball playoffs that start this week.

After all, the Mustangs have a 27-0 record and are ranked No. 1 in the nation by USA Today and No. 1 in the state by Cal-Hi Sports News.

The Mustangs, led by twins Pauline and Geannine Jordan, would appear to have an easy match-up in their first-round game against Bishop Montgomery at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Altadena. The Knights have won only four of 20 games this season but finished third in the Angelus League.

Pauline Jordan, a 6-3 senior center, is averaging 22 points. Sister Geannine (6-2) is averaging 15. Another standout on a big front line is 6-3 sophomore forward Tasha Bradley.

Two other seeded valley teams in the playoffs are Montview League champion Charter Oak (20-3), seeded No. 3 in 1-A, and Ramona Convent (16-4), No. 4 in the Small Schools Division. Charter Oak plays host to Rim of the World and Ramona Convent will be at home against either Whitney or Campbell Hall in opening-round games Saturday.

Other top teams from the valley entering postseason play are San Gabriel (19-4), Walnut (22-4) and Wilson (19-5) in 3-A, La Puente (17-5) and Monrovia (17-4) in 2-A and Marshall Fundamental (15-4) in 1-A.

In games Saturday, San Gabriel plays host to Rowland, Wilson will be at home against either Villa Park or Katella, Walnut entertains Moreno Valley, La Puente plays host to Calexico, and Monrovia has the home court against Bellflower and Marshall Fundamental against St. Joseph of Santa Maria.

The second round in all divisions will be played Wednesday, quarterfinals March 1, semifinals March 4 and finals March 7.

First place in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. will be at stake when Cal State Los Angeles visits Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in men’s basketball at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Cal State is 15-5 overall and 9-2 in the CCAA, one game behind San Luis Obispo (20-4, 10-1). San Luis Obispo defeated Cal State, 73-72, in their first meeting Jan. 31.

Cal State, bidding for its first conference title in 27 years, will be shorthanded because 6-4 senior guard Shawn Holiday, a preseason Division II All-American selection, suffered a broken finger last week during a 69-65 victory over UC Riverside.

Holiday, who had been averaging 11.8 points and 5 assists, is expected to miss at least three games.

In Holiday’s absence, the Golden Eagles will rely on 6-3 senior guard Sam Veal, who averages 19.2 points, and 6-10 senior center Tony Brown, who is averaging 14.7 points and 11.1 rebounds. Another top player for Cal State is 6-8 forward James Stewart.

San Luis Obispo is led by forward Sean Chambers, who averages 15 points and 6.1 rebounds.

Two boys teams and two girls teams from the San Gabriel Valley have been seeded in the CIF Southern Section soccer playoffs that start this week.

Baldwin Park (16-3-1) is seeded No. 2 and Monrovia (13-5-1) is No. 4 in the boys 2-A Division, and Arcadia (16-1-3) is No. 4 in girls 3-A and Monrovia (12-5-1) No. 3 in girls 2-A.

In first-round games, Baldwin Park plays host to Paraclete or St. Monica and Monrovia entertains Calexico in boys 2-A at 3 p.m. today and Arcadia is at home against Bishop Amat and Monrovia plays host to either Cate or Oak Park in girls 3-A at 3 p.m. Friday.

Other top boys teams in post-season play are Walnut (13-6-2) and Diamond Bar (17-3-3) in 3-A, La Salle (12-5-2) in 2-A and Marshall Fundamental (11-7-4) in 1-A.

Top girls teams include defending champion Claremont (20-3-2) in 4-A, Walnut (18-4-1) in 3-A and Bonita (11-5-3) in 2-A.

Claremont High Coach Bob Baiz, who has guided his team to two straight CIF Eastern Conference football championships, and San Marino Coach Bill Maloney have been named coaches for the seventh annual Hall of Fame All-Star Prep Football Game on Aug. 8 at Arroyo High School in El Monte.

Baiz, who has posted a 66-19-3 record in seven seasons at Claremont, will coach the East. Maloney, who guided San Marino to a tie for first in the Rio Hondo League last year and has a record of 21-11 in three years with the Titans, will coach the West.

Players will be announced later, according to Jim Brownfield, president of the National Football Foundation San Gabriel Valley Chapter that sponsors the game.

Proceeds will benefit the football foundation’s scholarship fund for scholar athletes.

Two San Gabriel Valley athletes were among winners at the Lite Beer Los Angeles Body Building Championships at Veterans Auditorium in Culver City.

Marjorie Anderson of Alhambra, 5-3 and 109 pounds, won the women’s lightweight and women’s overall championships, and Errol Lawson of La Puente (5-7, 162) captured the men’s middleweight division.

Cal State Los Angeles women’s track Coach Gudrun Armanski has been named sprint and relay coach for the West team at the 1986 U. S. Olympic Festival on July 25 through Aug. 4 at Houston.

Under Armanski’s direction, Cal State has never finished worse than 15th in the NCAA Division I championship meet and has helped develop Olympic sprinters Sherri and Denean Howard and Rosalyn Bryant.

Said Armanski, coach at Cal State since 1973: “I’m elated. I’ve always had to go to such meets . . . by paying my own way. Now I’ve been selected as a coach so I don’t have to pay to get in.”
