BRIEFLY : Grimes, Kennedy New Coaches in Pac-8

North Hollywood High and Polytechnic, which tied for sixth place in the Pac-8 football league last season, will have new coaches next season.

The Times has learned that Fred Grimes, an assistant coach at Pierce College for the past three seasons, will be named to head the North Hollywood program. Kevin Kennedy was an assistant at Poly last season.

Grimes, 37, replaces Fred Neilsen at North Hollywood. North Hollywood was 2-7 overall and 2-5 in league last season.

Grimes, who coached the quarterbacks, receivers and inside linebackers at Pierce, is a math and physical education teacher at Granada Hills High. He is a graduate of Poly and played football at Valley College and Cal State Northridge.

Kennedy, who last season returned to high school coaching after spending two years as an assistant at Southwest College, will replace Dick Windham, who resigned. Kennedy, 37, has taught math and PE at Poly for the past three years.

Grant’s McKee Retires After 27 Seasons

Bill McKee, basketball coach at Grant High since the school opened in 1959, has retired and will be replaced by Howard Levine. McKee, who coached the Lancers to a 20-1 record in 1982, will continue to teach at the Van Nuys campus.

Levine, 31, assumes the varsity job after coaching Grant’s B and C teams to 14-0 records this season.

Grant’s was 4-12 overall and 2-8 in the East Valley League this season.

Canyons, Southwest to Play in Sports Arena

College of the Canyons will play Southwest at the Sports Arena on Friday in a game that will decide the Mountain Valley Conference championship.

Canyons, ranked No. 13 in Southern California by the JC Athletic Bureau, is the defending conference champion. The Cougars are 7-1, 18-8 overall. Southwest (8-0, 23-4) is ranked No. 9 in the state. Game time is 4:30 p.m.

The game will be a prelude to a National Basketball Assn. game between the Clippers and the Golden State Warriors.
