Applications for summer lifeguard jobs at Los Angeles County beaches are available at all lifeguard stations between Zuma Beach and Cabrillo Beach and are due March 28.

Eligible candidates will compete April 12 in a 1,000-meter ocean swim on the south side of the Santa Monica Pier.

Those who want to participate in the swim must submit an application and a certificate from a swim coach as proof of the ability to swim 1,000 meters in 18 minutes or less in a regulation-size pool.

Lifeguard Lt. Jerry Shoemaker said he expects 100 to 150 contestants at the swim, which will begin at 7 a.m.

Of the 75 selected that day, about 60 are expected to successfully complete the county’s six-day training program, physical exam and interviews, according to Shoemaker.

Informal training sessions at the Santa Monica Lifeguard Headquarters, 1642 Promenade, will be offered March 29 to 30 and April 5 to 6 between 8 and 10 a.m. Further information can be obtained by calling (213) 545-4502.
