Southern Section Roundup : Favorites in 4-A Advance Easily

The apparent collision course between Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley and Santa Monica highs schools continued Tuesday night, with the 4-A division’s top-seeded teams advancing with ease.

Capistrano Valley raced to a 40-24 halftime lead en route to a 86-52 win over Rialto Eisenhower at Saddleback College.

Senior point guard Nathan Call, who will play for Brigham Young next season, had a game-high 27 points and added 13 assists and 5 rebounds. Shawn Reed had 18 points and Scott Stark 14 for Capistrano Valley (26-2).

Santa Monica, the division’s No. 2 seed, had little trouble in the second round, advancing to the quarterfinals with a 90-60 win over Santa Barbara at Santa Monica College. Santa Monica jumped to a 10-point lead and increased it to 20 by halftime behind the play of Keith Harris, who finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Carrick DeHart had 9 points, 9 rebounds, and 8 assists.

Jeff Fryer, the Southern Section’s second-leading scorer at 27.8 points per game, was limited to 12 points as Compton Dominguez defeated Corona del Mar, 53-37, at Compton College.

Dominguez guard Marlon Vaughn blocked the senior forward’s first shot and effectively held Fryer--who scored 41 in Corona del Mar’s first-round win over Orange El Modena--to 5-of-16 shooting.

Dominguez (21-5) will meet Santa Monica in the quarterfinals.

In another 4-A game, senior guard Rod Moten scored 31 points as San Gorgonio got past Inglewood, 71-65. Moten made 12 of 17 shots and had 4 assists. San Gorgonio (23-3) will meet Pasadena Muir (25-4), a 69-58 winner over Mission Viejo, in the quarterfinals.

Sophomore center Don McLean scored 18 points, including 8 in the fourth quarter, to help Simi Valley (25-2) defeat Santa Ana, 63-53, at Orange High. Simi Valley will meet Rolling Hills in the quarterfinals.

Also in the 4-A, Oxnard Rio Mesa defeated Culver City, 71-70.

Tarron Wiley had 28 points and 13 assists as defending 3-A champion Inglewood Morningside breezed to an 85-71 win over La Puente Nogales at Inglewood High. Elden Campbell, a 6-10 center who had 26 points, 18 rebounds and 5 blocks, will get a chance at Brea-Olinda’s 6-10 Keith Walker in the quarterfinals.

Walker, who will play for UCLA, scored 33 points to lead Brea-Olinda over Los Alamitos, 69-58, as the Wildcats advanced to the third round for the first time in six years.

With UCLA Coach Walt Hazzard watching from the stands, Walker scored 12 in the first quarter and 21 in the first half. Walker was 6 of 6 from the line as Brea-Olinda completed 19 of 26 free throws in the final quarter.

Scott Williams hit 11 of 14 from the field and scored 28 points to lead Hacienda Heights Wilson into the 3-A division quarterfinals with a 63-50 victory over Valencia at Wilson. Williams, who will play for North Carolina next season, also had 11 rebounds for the third-seeded Wildcats (25-3).

In other 3-A action, Claremont beat Burbank, 76-51; La Verne Damien defeated Ridgecrest Burroughs, 70-63, and Katella had no trouble with Compton Centennial, 71-45.

Defending champion Santa Clara was upended at San Luis Obispo, 36-30.

In the Small Schools division, Shaun Lewis scored a layup with five seconds left to lift Bel-Air Prep to a 50-49 win over previously undefeated Templeton.
