Southern Section Soccer Playoffs : Santa Ana Makes Quarterfinals, 2-0

The Santa Ana High School boys’ soccer team advanced to the quarterfinals of the the CIF Southern Section 4-A playoffs with a 2-0 victory over Riverside Poly Tuesday afternoon at Santa Ana.

Senior defender Frank Rea and junior midfielder Hector Tapia scored in the first half to lead the Saints (16-3-5), the Century League’s second-place team, past the Citrus Belt League Champions.

In 3-A action:

Esperanza 5, Corona 0--The top-ranked Aztecs (22-0-4) recorded their 19th shutout of the season at Corona, tying the CIF record set by La Quinta. Ed Quigley scored twice to lead Esperanza. Brent Vish, Karl Bowers and Craig Loyd added one goal each. Corona, winner of the Ivy League, finished with a 15-4-3 record. Esperanza meets Hart Friday in the quarterfinals. Both teams have shut out their first two playoff opponents.

Dana Hills 2, Walnut 0--Freshman forward Gabe Smith scored in the first half and senior forward Randy Weston added a second half goal to lead the No. 5 Dolphins, the champions of the South Coast League, at Walnut. Dana Hills (19-2-2) will play Moore League champion Long Beach Millikan Friday.

In 2-A action:

La Quinta 2, Edgewood 1--Dan Quiggins scored two goals, including the game-winner 17 minutes into the second half to rally the Aztecs (14-8-1) to a second-round victory at home. Quiggins’ first goal 34 minutes into the first half had tied the scored at 1-1. La Quinta plays Monrovia, the Rio Hondo League champion, in a quarterfinal game Friday.

In girls’ 3-A action:

Simi Valley 2, Villa Park 0--Patty Gainey and Tammy Schroeder scored second half goals as the Spartans (13-8-2), the second-place team from the Century League, were eliminated at home.

Pacifica 1, Hemet 0--Sophomore forward Cheryl Koser scored nine minutes into the first half and goalie Dana Schneider made 15 saves to lead the Mariners, Empire League champions, at home. Pacifica (16-1-1) plays Walnut in Friday’s quarterfinals.

La Quinta 3, El Modena 0--Junior forward Kristin Harkins had two of the Aztecs three first half goals to lead the defending 3-A champions to a shutout at El Modena. Junior forward Lisa Miller also scored for La Quinta (20-5-2), which plays Kennedy in the quarterfinals Friday. El Modena finished 11-6-7.
