San Diego Section Soccer Playoffs : Grossmont Advances to Semifinals

SAN DIEGO — The Grossmont High girls’ soccer team began to envision advancing in the girls’ 3-A soccer playoffs Wednesday after taking a 2-0 lead over Mount Carmel near the end of the first half. But the Foothillers had to fight off a late comeback by the visitors before winning, 3-2. Grossmont will advance to the semifinals on Tuesday, playing Bonita Vista at a site to be determined.
The Foothillers (17-2-2) took the lead after Meghan Foster passed to right wing Kim Ramsay, who scored with about a minute into the game.
Eleven minutes into the half, Michelle Miller passed off to Foster near the post, and she scored Grossmont’s second goal.
Mount Carmel (8-4-1) fought back to a 2-2 tie midway through the second half. But Grossmont left wing Jennifer Strauss headed in the winning goal from seven feet out.
In other girls’ action:
Serra 3, Chula Vista 0--Elizabeth Ward scored two goals to advance the Conquistadors (16-4-2) to the 3-A semifinals against Poway Wednesday. Serra’s Cheryl Parker added a goal early in the second half. Chula Vista ended its season 12-7.
San Pasqual 2, Our Lady of Peace 0--The top-seeded Eagles, paced by Christi Toler, controlled the tempo throughout the 2-A playoff at San Pasqual. The Eagles (17-3-2) meet La Jolla Tuesday in the semifinals.
Three minutes into the game, a shot attempt by Toler was deflected by the Pilot goalkeeper, but Lisa Klapka scored for the Eagles. With three minutes left to play, Toler headed in a goal to seal the victory.
The Pilots end their season 14-8.
Southwest 2, Ramona 0--The Raiders controlled the 2-A playoff from the start. Southwest (16-3-6) advances to the semifinal Wednesday against University. Ramona finished its season 15-4-3.
In boys’ action:
Vista 2, Mira Mesa 1--Mira Mesa got off to an early lead after sophomore Paul Gelvezon scored in the opening minutes, but Vista dominated the second half of the 3-A playoff match. Vista (16-5-4) will face Bonita Vista in Tuesday’s semifinal. Mira Mesa finished its season 12-4-4.
