Cook Leads Fountain Valley Again : Barons Beat Mater Dei, 65-39, for Second-Round Win

Jackie Cook once again led Fountain Valley High School as the Barons had a surprisingly easy time beating Mater Dei, 65-39, in the second round of the Southern Section 4-A playoffs Wednesday at Mater Dei.

Cook, a 6-foot forward, scored 19 points and had 10 rebounds in three quarters. The Barons’ other starting forward, Dawn Lawler, added 12 points. Guard Melissa Handley had 15.

“We knew we had a height advantage so we exploited it,” said Carol Strausberg, Fountain Valley coach.

Cook, who also plays volleyball, has been on a tear of late. She scored 27 points and had 28 rebounds in the Barons’ opening-round win against Pasadena.

“I think it took Jackie a little longer to make the transition from one sport to another,” Strausberg said. “It takes a little longer to be aware of the players around you.”

The Barons led 30-14 at halftime. Foutain Valley (24-5) limited Mater Dei’s top scorer, Geri Gainey, to eight points. Kim Ellerman also had eight points.

“We did a good job of changing our defenses between man-to-man and zone,” Strausberg said. “That might of shook them.”

In other 4-A action:

Lynwood 54, Edison 51--The Chargers led, 51-49, with 1 1/2 minutes left, but committed two turnovers that the Knights (24-3) converted for points. Lynwood’s sophomore guard Trise Jackson led all scorers 25 points. Edison center Stacee Johnson had 18 points and 9 rebounds. Guard Denise Ogburn added 16 points and 5 assists. Lynwood led, 29-27, at halftime, but the Chargers outscored the Knights 15-8 in the third quarter to take a 42-37 lead.

Foothill 61, Burroughs 48--Center Chris McFerson had 24 points and Stephanie Fleischaker added 16 to lead the No. 2 seed at Burbank. McFerson and Fleischaker combined for 29 of Foothill’s 31 first-half points. The Knights’ outscored Burroughs 22-8 in the third quarter with point guard Felice Geddy scoring 10 points. Geddy had 14 points and 9 assists.

Riverside Poly vs. Mission Viejo--Wednesday’s game was cancelled because the referees did not show at Mission Viejo. The game has been rescheduled for tonight at 7:30 at Mission Viejo.

In 3-A action:

Brea-Olinda 85, Woodbridge 38--Susan Tousey scored 24 points and grabbed 18 rebounds to lead the Wildcats at Brea. Carrie Egan added 18 points and Charlene Schuessler added 13 points and 12 assists for the Wildcats. Brea (24-3) raced to a 47-19 halftime lead and was never challenged. Woodbridge finished its season 20-7.

Esperanza 40, San Gabriel 39--Laura Jones scored 14 points and Sharon Warmus added 12 for the Aztecs at San Gabriel. The Matadors had the ball with three seconds remaining and trailing by a point, but fumbled the ball away. San Gabriel’s Rachel Noris led all scorers with 22.

In 2-A action:

Chino 66, Bolsa Grande 39--The Matadors were never close in this game against the No. 1 seeded Cowboys (26-1). Forward Doreen Day had 12 points and Roseann Flores added 8 for Bolsa Grande. Chino’s only loss this season was to the nation’s No. 1 team, Muir.

La Quinta 52, La Habra 38--The Aztecs’ Donna Gondringer scored 19 points to lead La Quinta at La Habra. The Highlanders’ Robin Seabrook led all scorers with 22.

In 1-A action:

Connelly 65, Elsinore 61--Cathy Smith scored 18 points to lead the Kolas (22-0) at Servite. Elsinore’s Karen Smith led all scorers with 31 points. Elsinore ends the season 19-3.

Whittier Christian 59, Marymount 37--Cindy Vyskocil had 25 points forward Toya Ellis added 16 for Whittier Christian. Lancers led 25-20 at the half and outscored Marymount 34-17 in the second half.
