Women’s Roundup : Long Beach Beats UCI in Finale

The UC Irvine women’s basketball team lost its final regular-season game to seventh-ranked Cal State Long Beach, 90-66, Friday night at Crawford Hall in Irvine.

Carol Brandt scored 26 points and had 14 rebounds, and teammate Faye Paige scored 22 points to lead the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. champion 49ers (24-3 overall). Natalie Crawford was the top scorer for the Anteaters (6-8, 14-13) with 28 points. She also had 12 rebounds.

All eight PCAA teams meet in the conference tournament, which starts March 6 at the Long Beach Arena.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. action:

Cal State Northridge 58, Chapman 57--Junior forward Denise Sitton made the front end of a one-and-one with with 20 seconds left to give the Matadors the win over the Panthers in the first round at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

Leone Patterson scored 23 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for the Panthers and teammate Valerie Hartsfield scored 16.

The win gave Northridge, ranked 14th in the nation, a berth in tonight’s championship game at 6 against defending national champion Cal Poly Pomona (25-3).

Pomona, which has been ranked No. 1 all season, defeated Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 83-61, in the other semifinal game, and has won 18 in a row. The Broncos have defeated Northridge 20 straight times dating back to 1976.

Chapman’s only hope is for an at-large berth to NCAA Division II Tournament. Those berths will be announced Sunday morning.
