San Diego Prep Baseball : Dunckel Leads Fallbrook With Two HRs

Bill Dunckel hit two solo home runs and a single Wednesday to lead Fallbrook to an 11-0 win over Laguna Hills in the Pirate-Goodman Tournament at Fallbrook High.

In five games, Dunckel is 12 for 16 with three homers.

“He’s the best athlete in our school and was when he was a sophomore,” said Dave Heid, Fallbrook coach. “He’s an amazingly talented kid. In baseball, he’ll be a major league prospect. But he’d be the No. 2 guy on our tennis team or the No. 1 guy on the golf team if he wanted to be.

“I’m just glad he likes baseball. And the best part is, he’s only a junior.”

Dunckel wasn’t Fallbrook’s only hero Wednesday. Four other players homered as the Warriors improved to 5-0.

T.J. Flynn hit his third home run of the season with one on in the third and Anthony Reynoso hit No. 2, a two-run shot in sixth. Keith Jester and David Waite both hit their first homers of the year.

HILLTOP-MOOSE TOURNAMENT Mission Bay 4, Chula Vista 1--Rusty Filter threw a no-hitter and struck out nine as the Buccaneers (3-1) handed the Spartans (3-1) their first loss of the season.

Chula Vista scored its only run in the first inning with the help of three Mission Bay errors.

The Bucs took the lead in the fourth on Tony Enomoto’s two-run double. Filter, a senior right-hander, had two hits.

Hilltop 11, St. Augustine 2--David Mossman had two hits and two RBIs and John Elkinton added a pair of RBIs to lead the defending 2-A champion Lancers (2-2) past the Saints (0-3) at Hilltop. Mossman also was the winning pitcher, going the first four innings and allowing just one run. Robbie DePerro pitched the final three innings to gain the save. Henry Negrete helped pace Hilltop’s 10-hit attack with three hits and two runs scored.

Poway 9, Helix 8--The Titans ran their tournament record to 2-1 with a win over Helix (1-3) at Helix.

CRAWFORD TOURNAMENT Serra 11, University City 3--Richie Callendar and Ronnie Lardizabal each had three hits to lead the Conquistadors (3-0) at University City (0-1).

Serra trailed, 3-2, after five innings, but scored four runs in the sixth to take the lead for good. Brian Smith, who had two hits, keyed the rally with a two-run double.

WARHAWK TOURNAMENT Kearny 8, San Dieguito 7--The Komets (2-2) rallied behind the efforts of Lupe Ford to win at home.

Ford had two hits, including a triple, scored two runs and had three RBIs. He also pitched the last 2 innings to earn the win.

Trailing 7-3, Kearny tied the game with four runs in the sixth. The Komets scoring the winning run in the bottom of the seventh on a bases-loaded walk.

San Dieguito is 1-3.

Madison 6, Escondido 0--Mike Williams pitched a two-hitter and struck out six to lead the Warhawks (2-2) past Escondido (2-3) at Madison.

GMC TOURNAMENT Patrick Henry 5, Santana 4--Steve Plein went 3 for 4 and had two RBIs to lead the Patriots (3-0) at Santana. Charlie Evans had two hits and one RBI for Patrick Henry, which gained a 5-0 lead in the first three innings.

Bruce Mottaw drove in two runs for Santana (1-1), which closed the game with a run in the fifth and three more in the sixth. Jeff Gay had two hits for the Sultans.
