KISS OF SUCCESS

Raul Julia, who got raves (but no Oscar nomination) for “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” has agreed to play back-to-back-to-back roles in three films, starting with a plum part opposite Jane Fonda in “The Morning After,” with Sidney Lumet directing.

Fonda plays an alcoholic involved in a mysterious murder in the Lorimar flick, which shoots in L.A. in early April. Julia will portray her estranged hairdresser husband (Jeff Bridges is Fonda’s lover).

Then Julia plays a Cuban exile in “The Florida Straits,” a feature for HBO, and a Mexican peasant in “The Penitent,” from producer Michael Fitzgerald.

Born in Puerto Rico, Julia has done two decades of non-ethnic roles on the New York stage. “I want to break away from playing ethnic roles in movies too,” he said. “I definitely would not play roles that I think might contribute to people’s stereotypes. But if the roles are good and have value, it’s my job as an actor to play them.”
