San Diego Lions AAA Baseball : Point Loma Uses Home Runs to Get Two Wins

Point Loma High School won its first two games Monday in the 36th Annual Lions/Mike Morrow Invitational Tournament.

Kevin Schlager hit two-run shots in the first and sixth innings to lead Point Loma to a 12-4 win over Grossmont in the Pointers’ first game. J.J. Northam, who was 3 for 4 with four RBIs, hit a three-run homer in the second and Buba Newton hit two-run blast in the sixth.

Doug Davis and Mike Clavell homered for Grossmont.

Point Loma had only one home run in its second game, but Noah Tafolla’s two-run shot in the sixth provided the difference in a 9-7 win over Mount Miguel. Northam was 2 for 4 in that game.

In other AAA games:

Granite Hills 17, Poway 9--Donnie Carroll was 4 for 5 with a double and a RBI as the Eagles had 16 hits and took advantage of six errors by the Titans for the win. Todd Parker was 3 for 5 with two doubles and three RBIs, and Kurt Southworth was 2 for 4 with a two-run homer in the first. Scott Gilliam was 3 for 4 with a double for Poway, which had 11 hits.

Poway 10, El Capitan 1--The first batter of the game, Gary Anderson, hit a homer that helped the Titans rout the host Vaqueros. Anderson was 3 for 3 with four RBIs. He also had a three-run double in the sixth. Phil Plantier was 2 for 3 with 4 RBIs with a three-run homer in the four-run fifth. Jim Tixier hit a home run in the third for El Capitan’s only run.

El Capitan 5, Montgomery 4 (8 innings)--Carlos Guttierez hit his first home run of the year on the first pitch of the eighth to give the Vaqueros the victory. Scott Murray was 3 for 4 and scored the tying run in the seventh. After Murray doubled with two out, Tixier drove him in with a single. Rob Arnold (3-1) went the distance for the win.

Monte Vista 17, Sweetwater 4--Ken Wall had four hits and seven RBIs to lead the Monarchs to an easy win at Sweetwater. Wall had a homer, a triple and two singles to lead an 11-hit attack.

Morse 5, Patrick Henry 1--Catcher Hector Gil’s two-out triple drove in two runs in the three-run first to give the host Tigers the win. Morse’s Ralph Portillo went 3 for 4 and scored twice, and Joel Lager was 2 for 3. Plein was 2 for 3 with two doubles.

Morse 7, Monte Vista 3--The Tigers had to score five runs in the seventh to beat the Monarchs. Duane Lager doubled in Javier Brown to tie the game at 3-3, then Derwin Proby’s one-out bases-loaded double put the Tigers ahead, 6-3.

Patrick Henry 5, Sweetwater 1--Ramon Llerenas pitched a three-hitter to lead the visiting Patriots. Charlie Evans went 3 for 3, including a triple. Steve Plein had two hits and two RBIs.

Mira Mesa 8, Grossmont 4--Mark Robert and Bobby Vigil each hit three-run homers as the Marauders scored seven runs in the sixth inning to overcome a 4-1 deficit at Grossmont. Mike Rendina had a solo homer for Grossmont.

Montgomery 5, Granite Hills 4--The Aztecs scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat the Eagles. With the bases loaded, Clement Alsip singled to score two runs, but the ball got by the left fielder, allowing another to score.

Santana 10, Chula Vista 4--Junior Troy Neunswander allowed the visiting Spartans only two hits in seven innings. Ken Todd hit a two-run homer in the third, and Dale Henson added a two-run shot in the fifth for the Sultans.

Madison 10, Helix 0--Scott Anderson pitched a four-hitter and first basemen Mark Moore hit a three-run home run to help the Warhawks knock off the Highlanders.
