The lawyer hired by the University of Texas to investigate fund-raising events during football Coach Fred Akers’ tenure has contributed more than $20,000 to a Longhorn booster club, according to a newspaper report.

The Austin American-Statesman said that John Fainter Jr., an Austin lawyer and former secretary of state, was hired by Texas last spring to examine alleged improprieties related to fund-raising barbecues and golf tournaments.

Fainter’s verbal report in January to university officials exonerated Akers of any wrongdoing. Fainter, who received both his undergraduate and law degrees from Texas, was paid about $7,000 for his work, said DeLoss Dodds, Texas men’s athletics director.
