Orange County Roundup : No. 1 USC to Face Hawaii in Volleyball at Saddleback

The top-ranked USC men’s volleyball team (19-1) will face No. 5-ranked Hawaii (12-3) at 7:30 tonight in a California Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. match at Saddleback College.

USC, which features six players and a head coach from Orange County, leads the CIVA with a 13-0 record; Hawaii is second at 12-3.

Besides Coach Bob Yoder, who prepped at San Clemente High School, the six Orange County Trojans are junior outside hitter Adam Johnson (Laguna Beach), senior setter Rudy Dvorak (Laguna Beach), junior outside hitter Dave Yoder (San Clemente), junior outside hitter Mike Hurlbut (San Clemente), sophomore outside hitter Scott McKeough (Fountain Valley) and freshman setter Jon Schisler (Corona del Mar).

Tickets will be available at the door at a cost of $3 for adults and $1.50 for students.

The seventh annual Anteater Run, featuring world-class runners Steve Scott, Ruth Wysocki and Tom Wysocki, is scheduled for Saturday, April 12, on and around the UC Irvine campus.

Early registration, with a Monday deadline, is $10 (including T-shirt). Late registration is $12. Entries are available at Rusty Pelican restaurants, Sportech and at Crawford Hall on the UCI campus.

Registration ends today for Jeff’s Sports Connection-City of Orange five-man, full-court and three-on-three basketball leagues, with competition to be held at Villa Park High School.

The first annual Orange County Performing Arts Center Triathlon will be held on Sunday, June 1, in and around Lake Mission Viejo, site of some of the cycling events of the 1984 Olympics.

This triathlon will consist of a 1.5-kilometer swim, a 35-kilometer bike race, and a 10-kilometer run.

Approximately 100 professionals will be competing for $8,000 in prize money, with awards going to age group winners. The contest is sanctioned by the Triathlon Federation of the United States.

All proceeds from the event will go toward the development of the Performing Arts Center under construction in Costa Mesa near South Coast Plaza. The facility is scheduled to open this fall.

Entry forms will be available in running, cycling, and triathlon stores throughout Southern California.

Lori Gayer of Northridge won the pro open division of the Women’s International Surfing Assn. San Onofre meet last Saturday at San Onofre State Beach, just south of San Clemente. Sherri Crummer of San Clemente, winner of the pro masters division (30 and older), was second in the open division and Nancy Emerson of Malibu was third.

Other division winners were Carlsbad’s Pam Gilligan (pro women 26 and under), England’s Arlene Maltman (amateur open), Carlsbad’s Erin Andrews (amateur junior women 17 and under), Carlsbad’s Amber Scott (amateur women 18-25), Norwalk’s Ellen Petrus (senior women 26-29) and Temecula’s Donna Bates (amateur masters 30 and older).

Registration is available for adult teams interested in participating in the California Basketball Championship Tournament to be held at Venice Beach on Memorial Day Weekend (May 24-26).

There will be three adult divisions: men’s open pro-am, men’s 6-foot-2 and under and a women’s open. The tournament will include a slam-dunk championship, a ladies foul-shooting contest and a ladies bathing suit contest.

The Saddleback Lawnbowling Club of Laguna Hills won the Southwest Divisional championship last weekend at Santa Anita and will represent Southern California in the State Championships to be held in Riverside April 25-26. The Saddleback team consists of Dick Talt, Don Peterson and White Sutton.
