A man who disguised himself as a woman to burglarize two businesses gave police the slip by kicking out the windows of a patrol car with his high heels, police said.

Officers caught up with a man wearing a red dress, black high heels and a gray, knee-length coat as he ran from an office building last week, his handbag and black wig flapping in the wind. He was handcuffed, placed in the back of a police cruiser and left alone while police secured the building.

He kicked out the window and bowed the frame of the door six inches, Detective Mark Alumbaugh said. Then he took his purse and wig and slithered through the six-inch opening to escape, the officer said.

Five days before the escape, a man wearing a dark blond, shoulder-length wig tried to burglarize an apartment complex office, police said.

Police say they identified the man from a driver’s license found in a car parked near the building. Also found was a white makeup case containing bronze and purple lipsticks, face makeup and various shades of eye shadow.

The man has a long criminal record and was most recently paroled from the state prison in 1982 after serving 30 months for burglary, Alumbaugh said.

“He’s not a transvestite as far as we know, but his makeup sure is elaborate,” Alumbaugh said.
