Seven people died and seven others were permanently paralyzed in amateur football during 1985, the National Center for Catastrophic Sports Injury Research said in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Head injuries accounted for six of the deaths. The other resulted from a ruptured spleen. Neck injuries were responsible for the paralysis cases.
Since 1931, when the American Football Coaches Assn. began the annual survey, more than 900 players have died of football-related injuries, the sports injury center said.
