A 63-year-old Lakewood man driving eastbound on Westminster Avenue in Seal Beach Wednesday evening collided head-on with a car coming in the opposite direction when his 1985 Cadillac crossed the street’s center divider, police said.

Critically injured in the accident were Howard M. Stein and the woman driver he hit, Davy Sreng Lu, 21, of Huntington Beach.

Sgt. Robert Krauss said both Stein and Lu were critically injured and airlifted to Fountain Valley Regional Hospital. Fifteen Orange County and Westminster firefighters and paramedics labored for an hour prying open a door to remove Lu from her 1974 Mercedes Benz.

Krauss said Stein was admitted to surgery with internal injuries and listed as critical. Lu sustained facial cuts, broken legs, a broken right wrist and possible internal injuries.

The accident occurred at 5:47 p.m. and forced the closure of Westminster Avenue between Seal Beach Boulevard and Bolsa Chica Road for 90 minutes.

Seal Beach traffic investigators are looking into what caused Stein’s vehicle to cross the center divider.
