SPRING HIGHLIGHTS : El Camino Beats Chatsworth, 8-6, to Move Into a Tie for First Place

El Camino Real High’s Ross Linstrom hit Chatsworth reliever Jeff Stolze’s first pitch over the right-center field fence with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning Thursday to lead the Conquistadores to an 8-6 win at home.
Linstrom’s two-run homer created a logjam atop the West Valley League. Both teams are tied for first with 6-2 records. Jeff Scheneman led off the seventh with a double to center to set the stage for Linstrom.
Ray Sabado hit a two-run homer to get El Camino Real’s offense going in the first inning. El Camino Real finished with 11 hits off Stolze and starter Mark Schauer.
For Chatsworth, Robert Roseboro was 3 for 4, including two doubles and two runs batted in. Teammate Manny Flores hit a two-run homer in the fourth.
Mike Teich went the distance for El Camino Real.
Reseda 1, Taft 0--Sophomore Steve Brody pitched a five-hit shutout for Reseda. Tony Gilmore had all three Reseda hits off Taft pitcher Colin Snyder.
Scott Schaeffer drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
North Hollywood 10, Verdugo Hills 1--Mark Eubanks, with relief help from Eddie Velarde, earned his eighth win of the season.
Mike Wells, Doug Williams and Glen Raasch had two hits each for North Hollywood.
Poly 11, Fairfax 2--Tim Hunt was 4 for 4 and Ray Palafox pitched a complete game as Poly remained in first place in the East Valley League.
Joe Speakes, Kenny Tatum and Palafox each chipped in two hits in Poly’s 13-hit attack.
San Fernando 7, Van Nuys 2-- The first six batters reached base for San Fernando in a four-run first inning. San Fernando’s Troy Knox was 4 for 4, scored twice and drove in a run.
Birmingham 15, Monroe 9--Kevin Gelbard was 3 for 4 and hit a solo home run to lead Birmingham to the Mid-Valley League win. The Braves scored nine straight runs to turn a 7-6 deficit into a 15-7 lead.
Tim Beagle also hit well for Birmingham, going 3 for 5 with four RBIs. Teammates Saul Flores and Toby Lopez each added a pair of hits. Monroe was paced by Ron Robart’s three hits.
Canoga Park 7, Cleveland 5--Aaron Marks’ two-run single with two outs in the top of the seventh won it for Canoga Park. Reliever Kasey Fink hurled 5 scoreless innings for the win.
Cal Christian 9, Coast Christian 6--Cal Christian’s Mitch Cizek hurled a one-hitter and allowed no earned runs. He struck out 11 and walked four. Michael Curl singled, doubled, tripled, and had four RBIs for Cal Christian.
St. Genevieve 1, Daniel Murphy 0--Catcher Frank Aguirre singled in Todd McMenamin in the top of the seventh inning for the winning run.
Rick Gonzalez started for St. Genevieve and was relieved by Hector Ruis in the sixth inning. The St. Genevieve pitchers shut down Daniel Murphy on four hits.
Village Christian 6, Marshall Fundamental 2--Bob Welch was 3 for 3 and had a three-run homer in the first inning to lead Village Christian. Tyler Victor was 2 for 4, and Royce Farrar was 2 for 3 for Village Christian in the Alpha League game.
Village Christian’s Mike Beliveau pitched the entire game, striking out 11 and allowing five hits.
Simi Lutheran 6, Pilgrim 5--Jonathan Doering was 3 for 3 with three RBIs, including a two-run home run in the seventh inning. Teammate Jeff Allen was 2 for 3 with a double and three runs scored in the Heritage League game.
Softball
Windward 13, Highland Hall 10--Kris Kinney was 4 for 4 and scored three runs, and Jamie Trudeau had a hit and two RBIs for Highland Hall.
Samantha Chin led Windward with one hit and two RBIs in the nonleague game.
L.A. Lutheran 3, L.A. Baptist 0--Maricela Lopez and Mickey Lehmkuhl combined for four hits and two RBIs for L.A. Lutheran.
Lehmkuhl also stole three bases and was the winning pitcher.
Kristy Davison was 2 for 3 for L.A. Baptist.
Canoga Park 1, Taft 0--Pitcher De Dow (9-2) hurled a two-hitter and struck out 14 for Canoga Park.
Dow also had the game-winning hit when she doubled in Pam Washington from second base in the first inning.
Burbank 3, San Gabriel 0--Debbie Day hurled her second perfect game and third no-hitter in the last four games for Burbank.
Kim White was 2 for 3, and Karrie Parsons had an RBI single in the third.
Sylmar 12, Monroe 2--Maureen Monroy had four hits, scored three runs and drove in a run for Sylmar.
Older sister Deanna Monroy contributed three hits and three RBIs, and was the winning pitcher.
Chatsworth 4, Granada Hills 1--Tina Shimozo struck out nine and walked one en route to her second no-hitter of the season for Chatsworth.
Angie Kaufman was 1 for 3 with two RBIs, and Stephanie Ellis scored two runs and singled to lead Chatsworth.
El Camino Real 3, Reseda 0--Sophomore Beth Silverman retired the first 18 batters she faced before yielding a single to open the seventh inning. Silverman (9-0) wound up with a one-hitter and 11 strikeouts. She also had two hits.
Cleveland 10, Birmingham 0--Denise Lyke scattered six hits and improved her record to 3-1. Cleveland’s Lynn Hammond had a double, triple and four RBIs.
Campbell Hall 28, Buckley 11--Tracy Murray went 4 for 6, including three doubles, seven RBIs and scored four runs for Campbell Hall. Buckley had just two hits but received 11 walks in the five-inning game.
Kennedy 6, San Fernando 3--Kennedy’s Pauline Madrid (9-3) struck out 14 batters and had a run-scoring double. April Ham keyed Kennedy’s four-run sixth inning with an infield single that drove in two runs.
Village Christian 24, Marshall Fundamental 0--Mary Thomas was 6 for 6, hit two homers, including a grand slam, for Village Christian. Michelle Vail (11-3) struck out 15 and hurled a one-hitter, allowing a bunt single in the fourth inning. Vail also was 4 for 5 with three RBIs.
Hart 4, Burroughs (B) 1--Cyndi Fox (13-5) scattered five hits and Nicki Fox was 2 for 4 and drove in a run for Hart. Burroughs’ star pitcher Christy Alves did not pitch because of a sore back.
Carpinteria 18, Moorpark 3--Deanna Pilkerton hurled a three-hitter and hit a homer in the second inning for Carpinteria. The game was called after the top of the fifth inning.
Holy Family 7, Flintridge Sacred Heart 4--Holy Family scored twice in the first, twice in the second, once in the fourth and added two more in the sixth for the win.
Sandy Shaw led Flintridge with two hits. Teammate Angela Brown was 2 for 3 with an RBI.
High School Volleyball
Harvard def. Torrance, 15-3, 15-4, 15-1--Harvard clinched its first Ocean League championship. John Shelton, a junior outside hitter, had eight kills for Harvard, while John Phelps, a senior outside hitter who will attend Princeton next fall, served nine straight points in the second game.
Boys High School Track
Burroughs (B) 111, Alhambra 16--Frank Mersola won the 330-yard intermediate hurdles (42.9) and the 110-yard high hurdles (15.42) to lead Burroughs (4-0 in Foothill League). Teammate Javier Primera won the 880 (1:59.25) and the two-mile (10:00.73), while Bruce Luizzi won the 100 (10.29) and the 220 (23.10).
Simi Valley 91, Camarillo 36--Simi Valley continued its domination of dual meets, improving its record to 62-1 over the last eight years under Coach Doni Green.
