A 39-year-old Valley Center farm laborer died early Friday in a fire that sheriff’s arson and homicide investigators said apparently started when he fell asleep while smoking in bed. According to a Sheriff’s Department spokesman, Valley Center firefighters were summoned to a house-trailer fire on Red Mountain Road about 1 a.m. After extinguishing the blaze, firefighters entered the trailer and found Luis Velazquez Vera dead.
