Roundup : Williams Hits in Pinch to Give Madison Share of First Place

SAN DIEGO — Mike Williams hit a pinch-hit, three-run homer with two outs in the top of the seventh Friday to give Madison a 6-4 City Eastern League win at Mira Mesa. Williams pitched the bottom of the seventh and retired the three batters he faced.
“Williams was supposed to start today but I decided to rest him,” Madison Coach Bob Roeder said. “He hit the ball hard over the 325-foot sign in left field, cleared it well. The whole place was shocked.”
Starter Chuck Frazier raised his record to 3-0. Madison (2-1 in league, 8-6 overall) moved into a tie in league with Mira Mesa (2-1, 10-11).
Elsewhere in the City Eastern League:
Point Loma 5, Morse 2-- Point Loma scored two unearned runs in the fifth for the victory at Morse. Eric Reading went the distance for the win. Pat Evenson hit a two-run homer for the sixth-ranked Pointers (2-1, 13-4). Morse is 1-2, 10-10.
Serra 3, Patrick Henry 3 (11 innings)--Eric Watkins of Patrick Henry pitched a complete-game eight-hitter but the No. 10 Patriots (0-2-1, 9-5-1) and Conquistadors (1-1-1, 13-5-1) tied in a game called because of darkness at Patrick Henry.
METRO CONFERENCE Bonita Vista 3, Chula Vista 2--Bill Miller was 2 for 3 with a double and pitcher David Woodhouse (5-0) gave up three hits in 6 innings for the Barons (3-2, 11-6). Chula Vista’s John Mercado hit a solo homer in the fourth.
Montgomery 5, Hilltop 2--No. 5 Montgomery scored four in the top of the third at Hilltop to lead 5-0, and pitcher Lee Langevin held on for the victory. Montgomery (5-1, 12-4) remains atop the Metro Conference. Hilltop is 2-4, 5-9.
Castle Park 15, Mar Vista 6--First baseman Joe Heredia hit a three-run homer in the fourth for visiting Castle Park (2-3, 8-7) to chase Mar Vista starter Mike McCormick, who gave up 11 runs. Jose Palos (2-3) pitched six innings. Luis Lopez hit a homer with two on in the fifth for Mar Vista (1-5, 5-9).
CITY CENTRAL LEAGUE Crawford 5, San Diego 5 (10 innings)--Troy Coronado worked out of a bases-loaded jam with no outs in the bottom of the ninth to preserve the tie for Crawford in a game called because of darkness. Crawford is 4-3-1, 8-8-1. San Diego is 4-3-1, 8-10-1.
Lincoln 8, Hoover 6--The Hornets (4-4, 12-8) scored five runs in the fifth inning to snap a 1-1 tie to beat the league-leading Cardinals (6-2, 9-7) at Lincoln.
CITY WESTERN LEAGUE Kearny 11, La Jolla 4--The Komets scored five runs in the second inning on two-run singles by Lupe Ford and Ray Wilgeroth. Robbie Trice was 4 for 5 and Chris Ponce was 3 for 3 for the Komets (4-4, 6-10). Starter Scot Welish (2-2) pitched the first five innings for the win. La Jolla is 1-4 and 6-11.
Mission Bay 5, Clairemont 0--Rusty Filter pitched a three-hitter to lead the No. 5 Buccaneers (6-2, 13-5) past the Chiefs (2-6, 5-10) at Clairemont.
University 7, University City 5-- Right fielder Tom Stilinovich tied the game at 5-5 with a two-run homer in the fifth, then doubled in a run in the seventh as University (5-3, 9-8) stayed a game behind league-leading Mission Bay. University City is 3-5 and 6-10.
AVOCADO LEAGUE San Pasqual 16, El Camino 0--San Pasqual scored five runs each in the second and third innings. Clint Cruz (2-2) pitched four innings. Darren Dunn went the last three innings, striking out six Wildcats and going 2 for 4, with two RBIs. Catcher Mike Maw went 2 for 4 with a pair of RBIs, and designated hitter Keith Nichols went 2 for 2, also with two RBIs. San Pasqual is 2-3, 7-7-1. El Camino is 0-5, 3-12.
Escondido 18, Ramona 9--Rick Afenir hit three homers in his first three at-bats to pace the Cougars (3-2, 10-8). Eight home runs were hit in the game, including two by John Schmutz of Ramona (3-2, 8-5). Escondido took advantage of 12 Ramona walks.
Carlsbad 12, Oceanside 9--Paul Bonogura’s bases-loaded triple in the fifth inning snapped a 7-7 tie as the Lancers (4-1, 8-8) beat the Pirates (3-3, 8-8) at Oceanside. Jeff Knox and Dustin Curtess each had three hits for Carlsbad, which is in first place in league.
PALOMAR LEAGUE Orange Glen 4, Poway 3--Poway (3-2, 10-6) took a 3-2 lead into the seventh inning, but Orange Glen (4-1, 11-5) came back with one in the seventh and won it with a single by right fielder Sean Cloonan in the bottom of the eighth.
Mount Carmel 5, Fallbrook 3--Miah Bradbury and Jim Tejcek hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning and Rich Hooper and Ron Kelly added homers in the second inning to lead the No. 3 Sundevils (5-0, 15-4) past the No. 4 Warriors (2-3, 14-5) at Fallbrook. T.J. Flynn and Joe Comer hit home runs for Fallbrook.
Vista 10, San Dieguito 5-- Roger Price was 3 for 5, including a solo homer in the sixth, and pitcher Tony Trousset doubled in two runs and won the game for Vista (2-3, 9-6). San Dieguito is 1-5, 5-10-2.
GROSSMONT LEAGUE Santana 14, El Cajon 1--Mike Hook (5-0) struck out 15 for the second-ranked Sultans. Jeff Gay was 2 for 4 with three RBIs and Bill Reed was 2 for 2 to lead the Sultans (6-1, 14-2).
Sanatana scored eight runs in the fifth inning, taking advantage of six walks and one hit batter. El Cajon is 1-6 and 1-9.
Valhalla 5, El Capitan 0--Bret Strickland’s two-run double in the fourth boosted the top-ranked Norseman (6-1-1, 13-4-1). Justin Post went the distance for the win. The Vaqueros (3-4, 8-9) committed five errors.
Mount Miguel 5, Helix 0--Delfin Merlin scattered eight hits to lead the Matadors (2-4-1, 7-8-1) past the Highlanders (3-4, 5-10) at Mount Miguel.
Granite Hills 7, Grossmont 4--Mike Raskin pitched five innings of hitless relief to help the Eagles (4-3, 8-7) past the Foothillers (5-2, 9-7) at Granite Hills.
NONLEAGUE Torrey Pines 6, San Marcos 1--Torrey Pines (3-13) scored a pair of runs in the first, fourth and sixth innings, and Scott Calkins picked up the win over No. 8 San Marcos (8-7).
