San Diego Prep Baseball Roundup : Woodhouse’s 1-Hitter Leads Bonita Vista Win

Bonita Vista High School pitcher David Woodhouse threw a one-hitter against Hilltop Friday, leading the host Barons to a 2-0 victory in Metro-Mesa League baseball play.

Woodhouse’s record improved to 6-0 with the win, and his earned-run average fell to 0.78. The senior pitcher has struck out 56 batters in 38 innings.

“That was the best game he’s pitched all season,” Bonita Vista Coach John Gibbs said. “He was free and easy, and kept his fastball low. He had pinpoint control and only threw 87 pitches.”

Hilltop (4-3 in league, 12-7 overall) nailed Woodhouse for the lone hit in the sixth inning.

That same inning, Bonita Vista (2-5, 5-10) got its first run on a triple by Doug Piter and a sacrifice by Jim Werner. Woodhouse’s sacrifice drove in the second run.

“It was an effortless performance,” Gibbs said. “He hasn’t been off all season.”

That includes his performance on the other side of the plate. Woodhouse is hitting better than .400 for Bonita Vista.

In other Metro-Mesa league play:

Sweetwater 2, Chula Vista 1--Steve Contreras picked up his first league win and hit a solo home run to tie the game as Sweetwater (5-2, 8-10) won at Chula Vista (4-4, 8-10). First baseman Augie Ruiz’s sacrifice scored second baseman Victor Ramirez with the game-winner in the fifth inning.

METRO-SOUTH BAY LEAGUE

Castle Park 2, Coronado 0--Jose Palos pitched a two-hitter as host Castle Park (3-4, 9-8) edged Coronado (4-4, 9-8).

Marian 5, Mar Vista 2--Marian starter Mark Cisneros threw a complete game and hit two home runs to pace the Crusaders at home. Marian hit four homers to Mar Vista’s two. Mar Vista starter Arturo Suarez was tagged for the loss.

AVOCADO LEAGUE

Carlsbad 3, San Pasqual 2 (eight innings)--Paul Faulkner (5-1) got the win in relief as Carlsbad (5-2, 9-9) came from behind for the win at home. The game was scoreless until the top of the eighth, when San Pasqual scored twice. After Carslbad evened the score in the bottom of the inning, Pete Bonagura scored the winning run on a dropped third strike by San Pasqual catcher Mike Maw.

Oceanside 6, Ramona 5 (14 innings)--Oceanside’s Tim Willard scored from second on a single in the bottom of the 14th to end the Pirates’ 4 1/2-hour game with Ramona. After each team scored a run in the fourth and the sixth innings, Ramona took a 5-2 lead in the 10th, when Oceanside committed three of its eight errors. However, the Pirates came back to score three runs in the bottom of the inning, two coming on wild pitches. Winning pitcher Henry Jimenez (4-4) also had three hits, including a solo homer and the game-winning RBI.

PALOMAR LEAGUE

Fallbrook 1, San Dieguito 0--Mark Ringcamp won a pitching duel with Gary Ross to give the Warriors (4-3, 16-4) a victory at San Dieguito (1-6, 6-11-2).

Ringcamp (2-0) threw a complete-game two-hitter, striking out nine. Ross gave up three hits, but one of those was an RBI-single by Joe Comer in the top of the first.

Mt. Carmel 7, Torrey Pines 5--Mt. Carmel (7-0, 17-4) scored four runs in the bottom of the first and led the rest of the way to beat Torrey Pines (2-5, 5-13). Ed Vanaelstyn got the win for the Sun Devils. Bret Kammerer had a two-run home run for Torrey Pines.

Poway 10, Vista 3--The Chieftans (4-3, 11-7) took an 8-0 lead to chase starter Kurt Tegman and beat host Vista (2-5, 9-8). Poway’s Ray Plantier was 3 for 3 with a triple, and teammate Corey Finnell had a double and a three-run homer. Eric Grimm was the winning pitcher.

NON-LEAGUE

Orange Glen 5, El Camino 2--Orange Glen (12-6) had four unearned runs against visiting El Camino (3-14) for the win. Eleven errors were committed in the game. Ricky Martinez picked up the win in relief. Orange Glen’s Glen Harkleroad went 2 for 4 and scored.
