The Tragedy at Central Library

Share

Make no mistake, the fire that raged through Central Library was a senseless, needless tragedy--the blame for which must be placed directly on the leaders of this city.

The loss of the evidences of our civilization, our humanness, embodied in that priceless, irreplaceable collection had been predicted-- in exactly the manner that it took place --by fire officials for more than 20 years. Yet our city leaders chose to argue endlessly over costs, over “landmark status,” over meaningless impediments, all the while ignoring the value of what lay within that building.

Our city leaders fiddled while our civilization burned.
