Green, Brooks Qualify for JC Track Finals

More than two dozen athletes from three Valley-area junior colleges qualified Tuesday for the Southern California Track Championships at Mt. San Antonio College. The championships are scheduled for Saturday.

Benjamin Green and Raymond Brooks of Valley qualified twice in the men’s division. Green had the third-fastest qualifying time in the 400 meters with a 47.53. James Wood of Pierce led qualifiers in the 400 with a 47.28.

Brooks, who will run with Green, Bert Jones and Larry Sebert as a part of Valley’s qualifying 400- and 1600-meter relay teams, finished with the second-fastest mark in the 400 intermediate hurdles in 52.56.

Moorpark qualified three men. Craig Ingram of Granada Hills notched the fastest time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:29.8, Mike Fine took the sixth qualifying spot in the shot put with a 50 1/2 heave, and Steve Tucker qualified ninth in the long jump with a leap of 21-11.

In the women’s division, Moorpark qualified eight athletes in seven events. Cheryl Benton qualified in the discus and the shot put with efforts of 126-9 and 36-2 1/2. Also qualifying in the shot put was Julie McAffe with a 38-10 effort.

Lisa Ash and Rhonda Ribar also qualified in the 1500 meters. Ash had the fastest qualifying time of 4:37.13 and Ribar ran 4:47.75.

Kim Stewart of Valley also qualified in the 1500, running 4:39.95.

In the women’s relays, Valley also qualified in the 400-meter event in 49.08, and Moorpark qualified in the 1600-meter relay in 4:04.4.
