SPRING HIGHLIGHTS : Cota and Halcovich Lead Canyons Win

Chris Cota and Frank Halcovich both were 2 for 4 to lead Canyons to a 5-4 victory Tuesday over Mission. Halcovich hit a solo home run in the second inning.

Mission went ahead early on a two-run homer by Daryl Robinson. But Canyons scored one run in the second and third, then three in the fifth for the win.

College of the Canyons, 15-2 in conference and 30-5 overall, leads the conference by two games over second-place Valley College. Three conference games remain for Canyons.

Valley 10, CP Pomona JV 0--Starting pitcher Dave Cossairt gave up only one hit in five innings Tuesday for Valley at home.

Cossairt’s record is 7-0 since he was moved from the bullpen into the starting rotation midway through the season. The Monarchs improved their record to 25-9 and have won 12 of their last 13 games.

Tim Riley, Dan Silvera and Sal Villasenor had two hits and two runs batted in each as Valley peppered the Broncos with 17 hits. Mark Glennie and Larry Aichler also had two hits.

High School Baseball

Chaminade 13, Pater Noster 0--Right-hander Benny Vigo hurled a five-inning no-hitter. Vigo (2-3) struck out five and walked one before the game was called to accommodate a Little League game scheduled on the same field.

San Fernando 9, Birmingham 7--Troy Knox (3 for 3, three RBIs) singled in Chris Gonzalez and Frank Zavala in the sixth inning for San Fernando. Zavala and Randy Guerrero were 3 for 4.

Ernie Perez was 4 for 4, scored three times and had an RBI for Birmingham.

Kennedy 13, Van Nuys 7--Roman Carter (4 for 5, three RBIs) hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning to lead Kennedy. Billy Picketts was 3 for 4 and added an RBI for Kennedy.

Matt Clancy was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, while Ryan Cunha was 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored to lead Van Nuys.

North Hollywood 7, Poly 2--Jesse Hilton hit a solo homer in the seventh and was 3 for 4 to lead North Hollywood. Poly dropped to second place in the East Valley League with the loss.

Grant 8, Sylmar 3--Grant, which moved into first place of the East Valley League with the win, was lead by Rodney Beck, who was 2 for 3 with three RBIs and hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning.

Cleveland 8, Taft 5--Cleveland’s Jimmy Doushgounian was 2 for 4 with an inside-the-park home run. Taft was led by Brad Rindt (2 for 4) and Andy Powell (2 for 3).

Bell-Jeff 6, LaSalle 5--LaSalle scored a run in the top of the 12th to go go ahead, 5-4, but Bell-Jeff tied it on a fielder’s choice, then scored the winning run when Tom Ressler scored on a wild pitch by LaSalle’s Tres Calabreset.

Simi Valley 8, Channel Islands 3--Tim Laker’s two-run homer capped a seven-run first inning for Simi Valley. Todd Sullivan (8-2) scattered six hits and allowed no earned runs. He struck out three and walked none.

Monroe 7, Granada Hills 6--Mark Kessler had a one-hitter through five innings, but Granada Hills blew a 6-0 lead and Monroe rallied for seven runs in the last two innings for the victory.

Loyola 1, Alemany 0--John Winnek singled with two outs in the top of the 10th to score Tom Mullen from second base for the only run of the game. Lou Skertich struck out 10 and threw a three-hitter for Loyola.

Calabasas 12, Nordhoff 9--With Calabasas leading 9-8 in the sixth inning, pinch-hitter Jared Ricco hit a bases-loaded double to drive in three insurance runs.

Canyon 7, Palmdale 4--Gary Morgan singled, doubled, homered and drove in three runs for Canyon.

Faith Baptist 7, Brentwood 6--Faith Baptist put together five singles in a three-run sixth inning. Todd Stadig was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Shaik Nabi (6-5) picked up the win for Faith Baptist.

Bosco Tech 10, Crespi 7--Bosco Tech sophomore Pete Landin belted a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning for the victory.

Simi Lutheran 7, California Christian 4--Jeff Allen and Sean Tucker each had two hits to support Jonathan Doering’s one-hitter for the Red Barons.

El Camino Real 7, Reseda 5--Gene Demyon had three RBIs and Jim Biscailuz was 2 for 3 with two RBIs for El Camino Real.

High School Softball

Grant 12, Marshall 2--Julie Mancilla tossed a three-hitter to lead Grant.

Chatsworth 19, Monroe 6--Pitcher Tina Shimozo had 11 strikeouts for Chatsworth, while two Monroe pitchers walked 16 Chatsworth batters to give away the North Valley League game.

Kennedy 12, Granada Hills 1--Kris Brown was 4 for 4, while Sharon Thompson scored three runs to lead Kennedy.

San Fernando 5, Sylmar 1--Last place San Fernando beat first-place Sylmar (5-2) by scoring twice on wild pitches and once on errors.

Taft 8, Birmingham 3--Taft scored three unearned runs on four Birmingham errors to win.

Burbank 7, Schurr 0--Burbank was led by Lesley Plank, who was 3 for 4 with a triple and an RBI.

Montclair Prep 8, L.A. Lutheran 6--Jodi Schenkman and Shauna Whitmore were each 2 for 3 with two RBIs for Montclair Prep.

Calabasas 18, Nordhoff 3--Carolynn Blake of Calabasas struck out 13 and carried a perfect game into the sixth inning before settling for two-hitter.

Hart 2, Alhambra 1--With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Hart’s Michelle Nedin hit an infield chopper that scored Nicole Fox from second base.

El Camino Real 3, Canoga Park 1--Sophomore Beth Silverman tossed a two-hitter and belted a three-run homer in the fourth inning for El Camino Real.

Village Christian 11, L.A. Baptist 1--Village Christian won its second consecutive Alpha League championship as Michelle Vail pitched her third no-hitter of the season.
