Keith Robinson of BYU took the lead after the first round of decathlon competition Wednesday as the four-day Western Athletic Conference and High Country Athletic Conference track and field championships began at Brigham Young University.

Robinson won the 100- and 400-meters and the long jump and was second in the shot put and tied for second in the high jump to run up a total of 3,871 points. Mark Sanders of San Diego State was in second place with 3,693 points after winning the shot put, placing second in the long jump, placing third in the 100 meters and seventh in the high jump.

Robinson, a junior, should have the edge as competition continues today because he is especially strong in the hurdles.

Also, Utah track Coach Mike Jones pointed out, “With the meet being at BYU, Robinson is used to training on the facilities they’ll be using, and they’re so even that might just be the difference,” Jones said.
