Share

As expected, Ron Lee of Cal State Bakersfield won the men’s high jump on the third day of the NCAA Division II track and field championships at Cal State Los Angeles.

But quite unexpectedly, the victory wasn’t an easy one. Lee, a 6-5 junior who set a Division II record with a jump of 7 feet 6 inches two weeks ago, won on the tiebreaker of fewer misses with an effort of 7-2. He narrowly escaped with the victory when Steve Jones of Cal State Los Angeles barely missed on his last attempt at 7-3.

Agapius Amo of East Texas State recorded a double, winning the steeplechase in 8:45.35 and the 10,000 in 29:15.82.

Abilene Christian was led by Freddie Williams, who ran 1:48.25 to win the 800 meters for the third consecutive year.

The Abilene Christian women’s team, seeking its fourth team title in five years, leads defending champion Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 63-45, after 10 events.

Yolanda Young helped Abilene Christian by winning the high jump with a meet-record 6-2. She also won the 400-meter hurdles in 58.78.

Behind a strong anchor leg by Dannette Young, Alabama A&M; set a Division II record of 44.50 in the 400 relay. Young also won the 200 meters for the third straight year in 22.84.

Darla Moberly of Central Missouri State set a meet record of 9:20.85 in the women’s 3,000.

The meet concludes today, with finals starting at 11 a.m.
