Suspicious Fire Breaks Out in Lumber Yard

More than 25 firefighters battled a major fire in an Orange lumber yard late Sunday, and authorities feared that flames could smolder unchecked for hours amid the dense stacks of wood.

The blaze of suspicious origin was reported at 9:26 p.m. in the South Bay Redwood Co. yard, located at 2200 N. Glassell St. in an industrial area in north Orange, police and fire officials said.

There were no reports of injuries, and no need for evacuations in the area during the Memorial Day weekend.

But firefighters were bracing late Sunday for a long night of battling flames and billowing clouds of smoke, according to Orange Police Sgt. Milt Galbraith.

Galbraith said the fire appeared to be virtually a repeat performance of a suspicious fire several years ago that smoldered in the same yard for more than 24 hours.

“That fire damn near destroyed the yard,” said Galbraith. “When flames get started in there, it keeps smoldering like a charcoal factory.”
