Musselman Tosses 5-Hitter as Gulls Win
Left-hander Jeff Musselman struck out six and tossed a five-hitter Friday as the Ventura County Gulls knocked off Visalia, 8-3, to complete a three-game California League sweep of the Oaks in Visalia.
Musselman (4-3) opened the game by retiring the first 13 hitters he faced before Gary Borg singled in the fifth inning. He lost his shutout bid in the ninth when Visalia’s Tom Schwarz lifted a pop fly to right field that was misplayed into a three-run double.
Ventura jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a home run by Santiago Garcia. Luis Reyna belted a solo home run in the third to make it 2-0. Darryl Landrum’s two-run homer in the eighth made it 4-0, and Jim Bishop hit a solo homer in the ninth to cap the scoring.
