Former Tulane forward Jon Johnson testified in New Orleans Thursday that he was recruited for a point-shaving scheme and was admonished by star center John (Hot Rod) Williams during one game to “play lazy defense.”
Williams is being tried on three counts of conspiring to fix college basketball games and two counts of actually carrying out the scheme.
Johnson said that while shooting layups during halftime warmups at the Memphis State game, Williams offered him $500 of Williams’ own money to join the scheme and said that little-used point guard Bobby Thompson would triple that amount. Williams asked him to “quit crashing the boards and playing the way you are playing,” Johnson testified.
Tulane, a six-point underdog, led by six points at the half but lost the Feb. 20, 1985 game by 11.
