Lothar Matthaeus drilled in a free kick from 30 yards out with two minutes remaining Tuesday at Monterrey, Mexico, lifting West Germany to a 1-0 victory that ended the World Cup dreams of Morocco, the first African team to ever advance past the opening round of the tournament.

Matthaeus, who was robbed seconds earlier by goalkeeper Badou Ezaki, put his free kick past the Moroccan defensive wall and into the right corner of the net, enabling the West Germans to advance to a game here against Mexico on Saturday.

Matthaeus had forced Ezaki to make a diving save on his low drive on the first good scoring chance of the game. Ezaki made the save of the game--perhaps of the entire tournament--in the final minutes of the first half. He seemed clearly beaten by Rummenigge’s shot off a centering pass by Klaus Allofs. Almost in self-defense, the goalie put up his hands as he sprinted across the goalmouth and got a piece of the shot, knocking it over the net.

Belgium is sending home star striker Erwin Vandenbergh and midfield veteran Rene Vandereycken today for treatment of knee injuries, team officials said at Toluca.

Vandenbergh and Vandereycken were part of Coach Guy Thys’ starting lineup in Belgium’s 2-1 opening-round loss to Mexico. But they were not in the lineup that upset the Soviet Union, 4-3, on Sunday to qualify Belgium for the quarterfinals of the World Cup for the first time.

Belgium will play in Puebla on Sunday against the winner of today’s match between Denmark and Spain.
