Jeff Newman’s managerial career started something like Jackie Moore’s ended. Newman replaced Moore as manager of the Oakland A’s on Thursday, then the Kansas City Royals spoiled his debut with a 9-2 rout of the A’s a little later at Kansas City.

“This wasn’t the way I wanted it to be,” said Newman, who will be managing the club on an interim basis. Oakland, which has not named a permanent successor, lost for the 18th time in 22 games.

Jorge Orta’s inside-the-park home run capped a four-run first inning for the Royals. Rudy Law drove in three runs with a double and a single, and Willie Wilson collected three hits as the Royals took an 8-1 lead after two innings.

Charlie Leibrandt (8-5) got the victory despite allowing the A’s 11 hits in eight innings.

Wilson singled leading off the first and scored on a triple by Lonnie Smith. Law hit an RBI double before Orta slashed a line drive into the left-field corner that got away from Dusty Baker and went for a home run.

Detroit 8, Baltimore 3--Lance Parrish hit a pair of two-run homers at Detroit to lead the Tigers past the Orioles.

The Tigers, who have won 7 of their last 10 games, have beaten Baltimore in six of seven games this season.

Walt Terrell (7-5) gave up five hits in 8 innings. He left the game after walking John Shelby with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth, and Willie Hernandez got the final out for his 14th save.

Texas 10, Seattle 3--Larry Parrish and Steve Buechele each hit two-run homers during a six-run first inning and the Rangers pounded out 17 hits at Seattle to snap a three-game losing streak. The Rangers had eight straight hits in the first inning. Tom Paciorek had four hits for the Rangers.
