Bernhard Genghini scored from close range 13 minutes into the first overtime period, and France went on to take third place in the World Cup with a 4-2 victory Saturday.

Genghini hooked a kick into the short side of the net past goalkeeper Jean-Marie Pfaff after a setup pass by Jean-Marc Ferreri.

Early in the second overtime, France’s Manuel Amoros was upended in the penalty area by defender Eric Gerets. Amoros was awarded a penalty kick, which he converted to make it 4-2.

With 18 minutes left in regulation and France ahead, 2-1, on goals by Ferreri and Jean-Pierre Papin, Belgium applied pressure and Nico Claesen tied it from 15 yards out. A crossing pass by Leo van der Elst was tapped by Daniel Veyt directly to Claesen.

Belgium’s Jan Ceulemans made it 1-0 in the game’s ninth minute when he took a pass from Stephane Demol in midfield and, with a defender bumping him, kicked the ball past charging goalie Albert Rust.

France, the European champion, finished the tournament with a 5-1-1 record. Belgium, which got this far in a World Cup for the first time, was 3-3-1.

The French did not suit up midfield stars Michel Platini and Alain Giresse and used mostly substitutes and players who had not seen action in the tournament. Belgium, which took an early lead on a goal by Jan Ceulemans, used most of its regular lineup.
