Cheapskate, a 70-1 shot ridden by Marco Castaneda, held off a desperate rally by even-money favorite Broad Brush and a subsequent stewards’ inquiry to win the $300,000 St. Paul Derby at Canterbury Downs by a nose.

Track stewards conducted a post-race inquiry to examine the possibility of a foul by Cheapskate, but ruled that the horse did not purposely nudge Broad Brush--who won the Wood Memorial and the Ohio Derby and finished third in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes.

A brown gelding, Cheapskate paid $146 to win, $41.40 to place and $15.80 to show. In winning the $180,000 first prize, he went 1 1/8 miles in 1:51 3/5.
