Toland Wins Qualifying Heat to Claim Paul Revere 250 Pole

Doug Toland of Ontario, riding a Suzuki GSX-R1100, won his 25-mile qualifying heat Wednesday night and claimed the pole position for the Paul Revere 250 motorcycle race at Daytona International Speedway.

Toland, riding for Team Hammer, will have the first starting spot in the 79-bike field Thursday night at 10 . for the 250-mile American Motorcyclist Assn. U.S. Endurance Championship race.

Suzukis swept the first five positions in the first qualifier for GTO class bikes more than 650cc. Lynn Miller of Athens, Ala., finished second, with Dave Schlosser of Pittsburgh third.

The defending race winner, Dr. John’s Mobil 1 Moto-Guzzi, finished 13th in the GTO heat with Gregg Smrz of Hollywood riding.

Winning the pole position for the GTU class, which starts in a group behind the larger bikes, was Terry Statum of Sunset Beach riding Team Sunset’s Kawasaki 600 Ninja.

Lap speeds and times are not calculated for the motorcycle qualifying.
