Avants Holds On, Wins NASCAR Race at Saugus Speedway
He may be from out of town--even out of state--but Roger Avants knows the Saugus Speedway track a lot better than he lets on.
Avants, from Littleton, Colo., took the lead on the fifth lap and held on under intense pressure by Troy Beebe to win the NASCAR Southwest Tour stock car race at Saugus on Saturday night.
It was Avants’ second win in the Southwest Tour for Grand American stock cars. It was the sixth race of the 14-race series. Avants is the first double-winner in the series.
His first win was in the the opening race of the series at Saugus Speedway on March 29. The Miller 100 marked only his second appearance at the track.
“It got a little edgy,” Avants said of the pressure put on him late in the race by Beebe. “I tell you, it sure is fun racing against these California boys.”
Said Beebe, who finished second: “Roger ran a great race,” he said. “He never bobbled.”
Ron Esau of Lakeside, Calif., finished third after jumping by Roman Calczynski of Sepulveda early in the race. Calczynski finished fourth.
Esau maintained his lead in the Southwest point standings. Avants moved past Calczynski into second place. Beebe is fourth.
