Rookie Will Clark, the San Francisco Giants’ regular first baseman, was optioned to Phoenix of the Pacific Coast League to work on his hitting while his injured elbow heals.
Clark, 22, was placed on the disabled list on June 4 after suffering a hyper-extended left elbow in a collision with Andre Galarraga of the Expos in Montreal on June 3. At the time of his injury, Clark was leading all National League rookies with six home runs and 18 runs batted in.
Clark cannot play in the field because of the elbow but will serve as the designated hitter for Phoenix.
