National League Roundup : Astros Win as Davis’ Star Rises With 2 Homers

Houston Manager Hal Lanier is pushing first baseman Glenn Davis for the All-Star team.

“We don’t draw the fans in Houston, so Glenn Davis doesn’t get enough All-Star votes,” Lanier said after Davis slugged two homers Monday night in the Astros’ 12-1 shellacking of the Montreal Expos at Houston. “He is not known around the league, but the way he is playing with those homers and RBIs, I think it’s about time the fans take notice.”

Davis hit a two-run homer in the third inning off loser Dennis Martinez (0-2) to give Houston a 3-1 lead, and added a three-run shot in the fifth to build the Astros’ margin to 6-1.

The two homers gave Davis a National League-leading 19 for the season and helped Mike Scott (9-5) to the victory. Kevin Bass also homered for the Expos, a grand slam in the ninth.

Scott pitched seven innings and allowed four hits and struck out seven to raise his major league-leading total to 158. Aurelio Lopez pitched the final two innings.

The Astros have lost six of their last eight games.

“We were flat tonight, and Davis put up a one-man show,” Expo Manager Buck Rodgers said.

Cruz tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by John Mizerock in the sixth to make it 6-1 and the Astros capped their scoring in the ninth with Bass’ grand slam, his 13th home run of the season.

Cincinnati 7, New York 6--Dave Parker’s two-run homer ignited a three-run seventh inning and the Reds’ John Franco choked off a seventh-inning uprising at New York.

Parker’s homer, his 16th, followed a single by pinch-hitter Tony Perez and came off Randy Niemann (1-3) to give the Reds a 6-4 lead.

Cincinnati added a run off reliever Bruce Berenyi when Eric Davis doubled and scored on Dave Concepcion’s sacrifice fly.

New York scored twice in the seventh on Howard Johnson’s leadoff home run and Gary Carter’s RBI single before Franco relieved winner Ron Robinson (7-0). Franco walked Darryl Strawberry but struck out George Foster with the tying run at second base.

Franco allowed two hits the rest of the way and recorded his 13th save.

Philadelphia 7, Atlanta 3--Gary Redus hit two home runs and Juan Samuel and John Russell also homered for the Phillies at Philadelphia.

Shane Rawley (11-4) became the second pitcher in the National League to win 11 games, even though he gave up 11 hits, walked 6 and struck out 3 in 8 innings. Atlanta starter David Palmer (5-7) surrendered all four home runs.

Redus, who hit his second and third of the season, and Samuel, who hit his seventh, powered back-to-back shots to start the bottom of the first and give Philadelphia a 2-0 lead.

The Phillies went ahead, 4-0, in the second on Redus’ second homer, which scored Tom Foley, who had walked.

The Braves closed to 4-2 in the fourth. Ozzie Virgil doubled and scored on a single by Ken Oberkfell, and Terry Harper, who had singled, scored on a double-play grounder hit by Palmer.

Philadelphia took a 6-2 lead in the bottom of the inning when Russell hit his seventh home run of the year to score Greg Gross, who had singled.

Atlanta added a run in the fifth when Dale Murphy doubled and scored on a double by Bob Horner.

Philadelphia added a run in the bottom of the inning when Mike Schmidt’s sacrifice fly scored Samuel.

Atlanta’s Ken Griffey extended his hitting streak to 18 games with a single to center in the seventh inning. Griffey has hit in all eight games since he was traded to Atlanta by the New York Yankees.

Pittsburgh 3, San Diego 1--Sid Bream’s three-run homer off Rich Gossage in the top of the 10th inning powered the Pirates to victory at San Diego.

The victory went to Cecilio Guante (3-1), who pitched the final two innings in relief of starter Rick Rhoden.
