‘POPS’ SET TO RETURN ON PBS

Five new summer programs are on the bill for the 17th season of “Evening at Pops” which gets under way later this month on public broadcasting stations. The series offers light classical and popular music performed by the Boston Pops Orchestra under the direction of John Williams.

Locally, KCET Channel 28 will air the Pops programs Mondays at 8 p.m., starting July 28. Other PBS stations will air the series on Sundays, beginning July 27.

The first program of the weekly summer season will be a tribute to Nat King Cole, with Natalie Cole and Johnny Mathis as guests.

Other new summer programs will feature pianist George Shearing and singer Mel Torme, soprano Kiri Te Kanawa, humorist-pianist Victor Borge, and singer Joe Williams and clarinetist Richad Stoltzman.
