‘Cat Man of Santa Ana’ and the Pet Population Explosion

Share

The recent article about “The Cat Man of Santa Ana” (June 13), who is sheltering 35 abandoned cats in his home, makes something crystal clear: Responsible citizens must get involved in the spaying and neutering of their animals.

Michael Fedoruk is to be commended for neutering all of his cats. He seems to be devoting his life to caring for cast-off felines, many of which are probably the result of careless breeding right in his own neighborhood.

What are his options? If the cats are sent to the county shelter, most will be destroyed. (Fortunately this is not San Bernardino, where they could also be sold for laboratory research experiments.)

Every person who counts himself compassionate needs to become educated and involved when it comes to the population explosion of our pets. More than 14 million unwanted animals (both mixed and purebred) were destroyed last year in animal shelters.

Tax incentives and public school education will help, but the real solution begins in your own home.
