BRIEFLY : Muckey Joins Staff at College of the Canyons

Scott Muckey, baseball coach at Valley College the past four years, will join Len Mohney’s staff at College of the Canyons in the fall, in was announced Wednesday.

Muckey will be the assistant and pitching coach for Mohney, who inherited the Canyons job when Mike Gillespie became coach at USC.

Muckey became available June 30, when he was one of 23 part-time coaches to be fired in the Los Angeles Community College District as faculty layoffs took effect.

Also named to Mohney’s staff was Andy Allensworth, who last season was third base coach at Hart High under Frank Sanchez. Sanchez has accepted an assistant coaching position under Gillespie at USC.

Greg Bolin, who played at Canyons in the 1981 and 1982 seasons, completes the coaching staff for the defending state community college champion.

“It’s a good group,” Mohney said. “I’ve known Scott since 1974, but we’ve never got together on a coaching staff before, so this should be fun.”

Muckey previously served as an assistant coach under Dave Gorrie at Pepperdine and at Valley College under Dave Snow, who now coaches Loyola Marymount.

Southern California Falls in USTA Final

The Southern team, representing eight states, swept Southern California, 5-0, to win the 18-year-old division in the U.S. Tennis Assn. Intersectional Team Championships on Wednesday at the University of South Carolina.

Steve Oliver, a senior from Calabasas High bound for UC Irvine in the fall, lost in the No. 3 singles match to Jack Frierson, 6-2, 6-1. Steve Wiere, Oliver’s teammate at Calabasas, did not play.

The Southern California team had won its first three matches to qualify for the final.

In a 5-0 victory over Northwestern on Sunday, Wiere defeated Ryan Shanse 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 in singles. The next day, Wiere defeated Roger Berry, 6-2, 6-4, as Southern California swept New England, 5-0.

On Tuesday in a 5-2 victory over Western, Wiere was defeated by Nick Barone, 4-7, 7-5, 7-6 in singles play. Oliver teamed with Greg Failla to beat David Drew and Jeff Newman of Western, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
