Atlanta pitcher Gene Garber walked three batters in the ninth inning, including pinch-hitter Candy Maldonado with one out and the bases loaded, enabling the San Francisco Giants to snap a four-game losing streak with a 3-2 victory Thursday night at Candlestick Park.

After Jose Uribe walked and advanced to second on pitcher Scott Garrelts’ sacrifice, Dan Gladden grounded to third baseman Rafael Ramirez, whose throw went past first baseman Ken Griffey. With runners on second and third, Garber walked Rob Thompson on four pitches.

Garber then walked Maldonado, missing outside with the count 3 and 2.

Giant starter Steve Carlton pitched 5 innings and struck out five, leaving him three short of 4,000 strikeouts for his career.

Earlier in the day, the Giants placed outfielder Jeffrey Leonard on the 21-day disabled list with a persistent wrist injury that could sideline him for the rest of the season. Leonard will undergo surgery next Thursday to repair a tendon in his right wrist.

Cleveland 8, Detroit 7--Rookie left-hander Scott Bailes, who had been hospitalized three nights earlier for treatment of stomach ulcers, shut out the Tigers on two hits in four innings of relief as the Indians came from behind to win at Cleveland.

Cleveland overcame a six-run deficit with three runs in the fifth and four in the eighth. Carmen Castillo’s RBI double capped the four-run eighth-inning rally.
