World-Class Track Athletes Have Qualified for All-Comers Championship in Van Nuys

The Los Angeles Unified School District All-Comers Track and Field Championship, which has attracted such greats as Dwight Stones and Don Quarrie in recent years, is scheduled for tonight at Birmingham High.

World-class athletes who have competed in the all-comer series this summer include Andre Phillips, John Brenner, Tom Hintnaus, Tonie Campbell and Regina Jacobs.

Phillips, ranked No. 1 in the world in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles by Track and Field News magazine in 1985, won the 400 meters at Birmingham on Wednesday night in 45.55.

The biggest surprise, however, was the performance by Jacobs in the 1,500 meters. The Stanford graduate ran 4:02.6, which is the fastest time by an American woman this year and moves her into third on the all-time U.S. performer list. Unfortunately, the mark may not be accepted by the The Athletics Congress because Jacobs ran the time in a race that included men.

Also qualifying for today’s 6:30 p.m. meet are Brenner, the TAC shotput champion this year; Hintnaus, a two-time Olympian in the pole vault, and Campbell, who ranked fourth in the world in the 110-meter high hurdles in 1985.

Quincy Watts of Taft High, the 200-meter state champion, leads the list of Valley-area high school competitors scheduled to compete. Others are Christy Farrell of Thousand Oaks, Ian Alsen of Granada Hills and Crissy Mills of Tarzana.
