Cyclist Goes on the Road to Prepare for Junior Team

Three years ago, Glen L’Heuruex began and ended a cycling trip in Saugus.

That may not sound like much by long-distance riding standards, but it is 3,200 miles from Saugus, Calif. to Saugus, Mass.--and L’Heuruex was only 12 when he made the 41-day ride with his father, Dave.

There won’t be any cross-country rides like that in the near future; L’Heuruex has become a road racer. He is participating this week in the U. S. Cycling Federation Junior National Championships in Boise, Ida.

L’Heuruex, who rides with the Santa Clarita Valley Bicycle Club, qualified for the event by winning the 34-mile road race and finishing fourth in the 12-mile time trial at last month’s District 3 Championships.

In Boise, L’Heuruex will compete against 14- and 15-year-olds. Next year he will compete in the 16- and 17-year-old division, from which the junior national team members are selected.

“The main reason I wanted to go was because it would break a psychological barrier,” L’Heuruex said. “I wanted to be able to come back when I was 16 and 17 and do well.”

Said Dave L’Heuruex: “It’s really just the beginning. This is a developmental phase for him. At the same time, he really does stand a chance of doing well.”
