Fast Start, Quick Exit for Reagan’s Son

Michael Reagan of Sherman Oaks got a quick start in the $20,000 Miami-to-Nassau powerboat race this week, but just 50 miles into the race his boat lost a propeller. Minutes later, the son of the President was plucked from the craft by Secret Service agents hovering overhead in a helicopter.

Reagan, 41, was driving his 38-foot outboard-powered Scarab in Tuesday’s start of the 370-mile race from Miami to the Bahamian capital and back when the boat lost a propeller near North Cat Cay.

When the crew was unable to replace the propeller, Reagan radioed race officials and told them that his boat was out of the race. The helicopter was then dispatched to return Michael to shore.

Reagan, holder of several long-distance offshore powerboat records, was joined aboard the Bud Light boat by throttleman Johnny Mann of Los Angeles and navigator Bob Latham of Fort Lauderdale. They were later towed back to shore in the boat.

The offshore race was a revival of the race last run in 1975.

Pyramid Lake Reopens for Fishing, Swimming

Pyramid Lake, closed twice in July because of insurance problems, has been reopened for fishing, swimming and picnicking. The campground, however, will remain closed along with the marina and boat-rental service.

The lake, located just off Interstate 5 below the town of Gorman in Angeles National Forest, was shut down July 15 because the lake’s operator, Pyramid Lake Resort Marina, was unable to obtain adequate liability and property damage insurance, according to the U.S. Forest Service. The lake was reopened and staffed by forest service personnel July 19 and 20, but was closed again July 21.

Pyramid Lake Resort Marina still has not obtained the necessary insurance, but forest service officials reopened the lake again on July 26 and said there are no further plans to close the site.

Campgrounds, rental boats and gasoline will be not available at the marina, however, a spokesman for the forest service said. In addition, food will not be sold at the concession stand. The launch ramp is open for private boaters.
