Clipper executives will meet Thursday with Joe Axelson, the Sacramento Kings’ general manager, in hopes of working out a deal involving free-agent guards Derek Smith and Franklin Edwards, both of whom have signed offer sheets with the Kings.
Smith received a reported five-year, $4.7-million offer sheet and Edwards a two-year, $500,000 offer last Thursday. The Clippers have until Aug. 22 to match the offers or lose Smith and Edwards.
The Clippers, however, could match the offer sheets and then trade Smith and Edwards to Sacramento. Axelson said Tuesday that he won’t trade guard Reggie Theus or center LaSalle Thompson.
Meanwhile, Clipper starting center Benoit Benjamin suffered a strained left shoulder in a scrimmage at the club’s rookie-free agent camp at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Rookie center John Brownlee also suffered an injury--a dislocated little finger.
